Welcome to our farm-Slagle's Family Farm!
We are a diversified farm located at N7705 Metropolitan Road in Felch, MI. While the original white pole building and field was a potato farm, we have been transitioning it into a commercial kitchen, greenhouse, soap shop, Pick-Your-Own Pumpkin Patch, and Farm Store. We have been growing our farm since 2009 and not one year has been the same, we always say, "We are a work in progress"!
Now, let me officially introduce ourselves! We are Jason and Jennifer Slagle and along with our daughter Lauren and niece Ashley Steinbrecher, we are the smiling faces that you will see working around the farm when you take a stop in. While we both were born and raised on farms in Ohio, we are the first of our families to farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We have been residents of the Felch area for almost 25 years now. We have three children in total, Cody(22), Justin(20), and Lauren(15) and all of them were raised here on the farm where they learned a strong work ethic as well as great respect for animals as well as people. While they have been instrumental in evolving our farm, our boys have since moved on to their own livelihoods and we are absolutely proud of whom they have become to be as a person as well as a human being, none of this would've been possible without them!
Here on Metropolitan Rd, we have 40 acres which is used for rotational fruit and vegetable, cover crop planting, pasture for the cows and Jackson the Donkey, as well as our commercial kitchen and farm store. In addition, our residence is 2 miles down the road where we have an another 40 acres that is where we raise and house all of our pigs(From farrow to finish), have our heated greenhouses, high tunnel, chickens, ducks, geese, one spoiled indoor cat, and 5 farm dogs. This was where we originally grew our produce.
With the growing season so short in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we raise our produce on raised plastic mulch bed rows with in ground drip irrigation, this allows us to control weed pressure without the use of herbicides on our plants as well as very efficiently provide water and nutrients to all of our crops. We start every single one of our plants from seed for our field in our greenhouses and also sell the same plants that we have found to be the best for our cool climate directly to you for your garden. We also grow and sell produce, utilize our harvest in our commercial kitchen, operate a pumpkin patch, make our own custom sausages, cook meals for the public, and sell from our farm store on Wednesday 3-7, Saturday 10-4 or by appointment.
If there is one thing that we have learned throughout the years, it's in order to be successful, you must be diversified!
