Closed for 2022. Thank you to all who came!
(PLEASE READ BEFORE COMING/PICKING)
We will be offering a Pick Your Own Bulk Tomato Patch on a one year trial basis to determine the feasibility. We hope this will both benefit our farm and the community. Please be patient with us as we navigate this new farm venture.
In order for this to work, we have created these guidelines:
- We will be opening within the week, and we are on Central Time. We will not be open everyday, and open hours will be sent via email and posted on Facebook. Picking hours will be determined by weather and how many pickers come. You can join our email tomato list by emailing slaglesfamilyfarm@gmail.com and write tomato list in the subject line. I will email when we are open as well as post on Facebook. Even when we are open, please call before coming to make sure there is available picking space- 906-221-5937. If you are on our delivery email, you will receive an email on open hours.
- Please wear old clothes and closed toe shoes. We do not spray our field, so there are plenty of weeds to walk through in the rows. Our tomatoes are on raised plastic rows so the tomatoes are easy to find. All of our tomatoes are naturally grown and have not been sprayed with any chemicals, so there are imperfections on the tomatoes
- Please understand that tomato picking will be open to ADULTS ONLY. No children will be allowed in the field. Children are welcome up at the building or seeing the cows and Jackson the Donkey under adult supervision. They love treats-veggies, fruits, bread, grains if you want to bring something to feed them. So please find a friend or family member to come with if you have children and split up the responsibilities or enjoy a day alone and come pick in our peaceful field. We will gladly let children in the field when our Pick Your Own Pumpkin Patch opens on September 24th.
- Please only pick tomatoes, other produce will be available for sale up at the building.
- Please bring your own picking containers and/or boxes. You must check into the building before going out to the field. I will weigh/tare your box and picking containers so you are only paying for your tomatoes once they are full. Buckets work the best!
- We will then give you verbal directions to the field. You will follow the reflectors into where the tomatoes are located. At any time you need assistance, please call 906-221-5937. Please stay on the path so you don’t damage the irrigation lines.
- Please pick your row, walk down to where the reflector is to start picking. You will only pick one side of the row. Move the reflector to where you finish to be considerate to the next picker. Rows start where the white signs are towards the center of the field.
- Please once tomatoes are picked bring your tomatoes back up to the building to be weighed and paid for. 20#’s and up is $.65#, anything under 20#’s is available pre picked in the building. A 4 gallon bucket is about 25#’s. If you would like to order pre-picked, Slicers are $.90# and romas are $.95# for 20 pounds and up.
